The Perfect Packer Pre-Season

GreenBay Packers Head CoachThe 2009 preseason is a perfect fit for a GreenBay Packers team that is making so many changes.

The first game of the preseason was against the Cleveland Browns. They were a weak team last year and have made little improvement this year. However, for a Packers team that is implementing a brand new defense, they were the perfect team to cut our teeth on.

Saturday’s game, against the Bills, will definitely be a step up from the Browns. We’ll be challenged much more by a Bills team that racked up 375 yards against a returning Bears defense that was very good last season.

In the Packers’ third preseason game, the one in which the starters will spend a lot more time on the field. The Packers will have two preseason warmup before they have to take on the reigning NFC champions. Most of the bugs should have been worked out by that time. If the Packers can hold their own against the Cardinals, we’ll know they’re ready for the regular season. If not…

The final game of the preseason is against the Tennessee Titans, and if Tennessee plays this one like last year’s game, they’ll keep their starters in most of the game. This will give McCarthy and company a great look at which #2s and #3s are ready to play and which are not. Our backups will be fighting for their jobs against the Titan starters. It’s a great chance for them to prove themselves.

Teams and coaches have a lot to accomplish in preseason and the 2009 Packer preseason appears to give the Packers the best chance to develop as a team and prepare for the games that matter.
